Three Lions Coach Explains The Vision: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry competed in League Two. Now, he's dedicated on helping the England manager win the World Cup next summer. The road from athlete to trainer commenced with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He had found his purpose.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a name with creative training and great man-management. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. He has worked with stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the top in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach so we can to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Dedication, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. The approach include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. He stresses “Team England” and avoids language such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend long hours toward. We must to not only anticipate with developments and to lead and create our own ones. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear during that time. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach ought to embody everything that is good from the top division,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the versatility, the physicality, the work ethic. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them a system that lets them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, attacking high up. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out the most challenging environments available to him to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that the club got rid of nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement at Chelsea was Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he brought Barry over away from London to rejoin him. English football's governing body see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
