Citizens have come together around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed state remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He added that the talks are "challenging and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war governance of the region

Civilian Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No place appears as home now and until every captive come back none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports 48 remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."

Research now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to end in return for the release of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of the gathering, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.

From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of that day in the west side district, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the night arrives, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."

"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional dead people had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the south, medical staff said.
