The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
