The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster

Line of Duty cast members
Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the popular police drama

The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
