The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Documenting Three Weeks In Custody

The ex-president of France plans a personal account this autumn titled A Prisoner’s Diary, which recounts the period endured in custody.

The revelation was made shortly following the former president gained freedom while his appeal proceeds his conviction for criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to acquire political financing from the regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he notes in a preview, indicating the account will focus on his thoughts during isolation instead of wider commentary regarding the strained and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, not present at the prison, where noise is a lot to hear,” he continues. “The noise is alas constant. But, just like the desert, personal reflection grows stronger in prison.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, the former leader participated remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, easing this ordeal manageable – as it truly is one.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark on any prisoner because it’s gruelling.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure of France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the three books he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where an innocent man ends up incarcerated then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

Sarkozy remained secluded due to safety concerns in a cell of about nine sq metres including private facilities at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated that he consumed just yogurt during his stay due to concerns meals provided might have been spat on. He had facilities for self-catering but refused this, according to reports. Unclear remains if he will detail what he ate in prison.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client each day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings security would be better released compared to inside. “He has faced death threats, has heard screaming during nighttime plus rapid actions next door when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

He entered custody on 21 October following the judiciary imposed a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration over a scheme to secure political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, and another court case is scheduled for early next year.
