The East African nation Receives Historic Items After a Century Holding in a German Family
Exactly 12 historical objects were ceremoniously returned to Ethiopia after being kept by a family in Germany for in excess of ten decades.
These artefacts, originally acquired in the 1920s by the German representative to Ethiopia Franz Weiss and his spouse his partner, were transferred on Wednesday to the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University.
The collection featured crowns, armor and artistic works, all viewed as culturally significant in the nation.
"These treasures continue to stand as a emblem of the long-standing and amicable relationship between the German nation and the Ethiopian people," remarked Ferdinand von Weyhe, the ambassador to Ethiopia.
Dr. Ramon Wyss, whose parent was born during the household's assignment in Ethiopia, presented the items at a ceremony attended by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He stated that the family's goal to return the artefacts was to "display their appeal with the public and preserve the culture and history connected to my father's beginning."
The items were either gifts or purchases, based on the household.
"We would like to thank Professor Weiss's relatives for concretely demonstrating their deep love for Ethiopia by diligently safeguarding these artifacts and vitally securing their return to their legitimate homeland," said the tourism minister.
She continued that the artefacts would shortly be made accessible to the general audience for investigation and academic study, calling the move a significant step in safeguarding Ethiopia's national treasures.
"Initiatives are ongoing to return old objects that are held in the custody of individuals and entities around the planet," the minister stated.
In the era of imperial control in the African continent, numerous of cultural objects were plundered.
This demand by African countries for the repatriation of stolen objects has been responded to by some success in the past few years - although some objects are only on loan.
Back in 2022, the German government was the initial state to repatriate a selection of the renowned Benin Bronzes to the West African nation in an attempt to deal with its "complex legacy."
