New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
