Jailhouse Shock: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He contested justice and the law won.

A couple of months following getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated plotter – who has been living under residential detention in his estate while a number of court processes and petitions proceed – is widely expected to be jailed in the near future, amid growing speculation that he will be moved to a well-known top-security facility.

Historical Statements on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right ex- paratrooper exhibited scant mercy for Brazil’s inmates.

“For what reason must we give these dirtbags a good life?” he once mused. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to end up in prison, all you have to do is not rape, abduction or rob.”

Jail Facility Discussion

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, a group of four this week toured the facility in an obvious attempt to discourage the high court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, claimed he predicted the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the consequence of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 political campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is very grave. He won’t be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells holding 40 detainees: “That’s practically one meter squared per prisoner.

“We conversed to the convicts and they protest, naturally, of the awful food,” remarked the senator.

Supporters React

Lucas is not the lone figure speaking out before the ex-leader's anticipated imprisonment.

Penning in a prominent publication, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to see “the greatest wrong in its past”.

“It is an unfairness that erodes the souls of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Response

That may be true given the substantial support Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. Yet his anticipated incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of many others who believe he ought to be jailed for planning to prevent the incoming president from becoming president – and also plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a politician for the sitting leader's Workers’ party, commented: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Nobody desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to get respectful handling – but dignified care in prison. He can’t carry on being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the harsh conditions of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Just now has the extreme right – which has always claimed that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to tour a jail to find out what situations are truly like,” he stated.

“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, insulting handling”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand inmates, his probable location seems to be a adjacent penitentiary for police officers and other “unique” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro had while living in the impressive official residence, around 12 miles away.

As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – roughly the area of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a set and also a cooler in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” information stated.

Ideological Responses

Senator Lucas condemned the speculated proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his future in the {
