The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
