One extended cruise through the Australian Coast is being halted days after the tragic passing of an elderly lady who was stranded by the vessel on a distant coastal location.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the party for a rest. The liner departed without her and came back later that day after the personnel discovered the passenger was missing.

A major search operation located her remains the following day.

Officials are looking into the incident, in coordination with police and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the shipping company stated that travelers and crew on the ship were told that the remainder of the cruise had been called off due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he added that guests would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also published an latest statement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Captain" prohibiting any new passengers from boarding the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its return.
