Catastrophe Occurs as Accidental Detonation at Law Enforcement Facility in Indian-administered Kashmir Takes Nine Fatalities
A catastrophic detonation at a police station in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir has resulted in the loss of nine individuals and wounding to thirty-two others, according to official statements.
The incident happened when a cache of impounded blast substances accidentally blew up during processing activities.
Sequence of Events
The explosion occurred on the evening of Friday at the Nowgam security post, where explosive materials seized from Faridabad region in the northern territory of Haryana province were being held provisionally.
Local police chief announced that the detonation substances were awaiting scientific analysis when a "deeply regrettable" accident during processing caused their detonation at approximately 11:20 PM local.
Police Statements
Security forces verified that this was an "accidental detonation" and rather than a terrorist attack. "Alternative theories regarding the origin of this occurrence is unneeded," emphasized the police chief during a journalist meeting.
The law enforcement facility suffered extensive destruction from the detonation, with adjacent buildings also being impacted by the strong explosion.
Aftermath and Fatalities
Multiple vehicles were "engulfed in flames and transformed into ashen remains, with wreckage spread across the location," according to police accounts.
"The power of the detonation was so extreme that some body parts were found in close-by residences, approximately 100-200 meters distant the law enforcement facility," stated an official source.
The bulk of the victims were police officers, along with forensic personnel, two evidence documentation specialists, and a garment worker who was accompanying the group.
Government Reaction
The area's Lieutenant Governor stated sympathies and confirmed that an investigation had been ordered into the devastating event.
"I have directed a probe to establish the cause of the accidental explosion. Extremely pained by the fatalities of important persons due to profoundly sorrowful inadvertent detonation at Nowgam security post in the Srinagar area. My condolences to the mourning loved ones. I hope for quick healing of the wounded," expressed the leader on social media.
