Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
